How to Choose Between Stepper, Servo and Brushless Motors for Your Machine
By AB Automation Team1 min read
Choosing between a stepper vs servo motor, or a brushless motor, is one of the most common design questions for machine builders. The right answer depends on load, speed, accuracy and budget.

The three options in brief
- Stepper motors move in fixed steps and are simple and economical for precise short moves.
- Servo systems use feedback for high speed and high dynamic performance.
- Brushless motors give efficient, adjustable-speed continuous rotation.
Comparison table
| Criteria | Stepper | Closed-loop stepper | Servo | Brushless |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Low | Medium | High | Low–medium |
| Positioning | Good | Very good | Excellent | Speed focus |
| Setup | Very easy | Easy | Tuning needed | Easy |
| High-speed dynamics | Limited | Moderate | Excellent | Good |
A simple decision path
- Continuous rotation with adjustable speed? Choose brushless or speed control motors.
- Short, accurate moves at low cost? Choose stepper motors.
- Cannot afford missed steps or homing? Choose closed-loop AZ series.
- Very high speed, heavy inertia or fast acceleration? Choose a servo, such as Mitsubishi Electric MELSERVO.

Common mistakes
- Sizing on holding torque instead of torque at operating speed
- Ignoring load inertia
- Over-specifying a servo where a closed-loop stepper would do
