Mitsubishi FX5U PLC: Features, Programming and Where It Fits
By AB Automation Team4 min read
The Mitsubishi Electric FX5U PLC is the main CPU of the MELSEC iQ-F series, the successor to the hugely popular FX3U. For most machine builders and plant engineers in India it is the default choice for a compact controller: it packs Ethernet, positioning, analog I/O and high-speed counting into one small unit, and it is programmed with the same GX Works3 software used for the larger iQ-R range.
This guide explains what the FX5U offers, how it compares with the other iQ-F CPUs, and where it is the right (or wrong) choice for your machine.
What is built into the FX5U
The biggest change from the older FX3U is how much now comes standard in the CPU, functions that previously needed separate adapters:
- Built-in Ethernet port for programming, HMI connection, SLMP/MC protocol communication with SCADA and other PLCs, and CC-Link IE Field Network Basic.
- Built-in RS-485 port for Modbus RTU and inverter communication with FR-series VFDs.
- Built-in analog I/O (two voltage inputs and one voltage output on the FX5U CPU), useful for speed references and simple sensor reading.
- High-speed counters and pulse outputs: up to four axes of 200 kHz pulse-train positioning, enough for stepper and pulse-type servo axes.
- SD card slot for data logging, recipe storage and program transfer without a laptop.
- Expandability with I/O modules, analog, temperature, positioning and network modules on the right side and expansion adapters on the left.
FX5U vs FX5UJ vs FX5UC vs iQ-R
| CPU | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| FX5UJ | Cost-sensitive, simple machines | Economy iQ-F CPU with fewer expansion options; good replacement for FX3G/FX3S class jobs. |
| FX5U | Most standalone machines | Full feature set with terminal-block I/O; the general-purpose choice. |
| FX5UC | Space-limited panels | Very compact body with connector-type I/O; ideal when panel width is tight. |
| iQ-R | Large lines and process plants | Rack-based, high I/O counts, redundancy and advanced motion; overkill for a single machine. |
A rule of thumb: if the machine runs on one panel with up to a few hundred I/O points and up to four pulse axes (or more via simple motion modules), the FX5U family will handle it comfortably.
Programming the FX5U with GX Works3
The FX5U is programmed in GX Works3, which supports ladder diagram, structured text (ST), function block diagram (FBD/LD) and SFC. Practical points our engineers recommend:
- Use labels instead of raw device addresses. Global and local labels make the program readable and make function blocks reusable across machines.
- Build function blocks for repeated logic such as motor starters, valve control and alarm handling. OEMs that build the same machine repeatedly save a great deal of commissioning time this way.
- Use the positioning parameter tables for pulse axes instead of writing every DRVA/DRVI instruction by hand; the table method is easier to maintain.
- Keep FX3U programs? GX Works3 can convert FX3U projects created in GX Works2, but always review converted code and test it, especially special relays, high-speed counters and communication settings.
Typical applications
- Packaging machines: filling, capping, labelling and form-fill-seal machines with servo or stepper axes.
- Textile machinery: winding, warping and processing machines with VFD speed control over RS-485.
- Material handling: conveyors, sorters and lifts linked to a GOT HMI over Ethernet.
- Utilities: pump, compressor and boiler auxiliary control with analog inputs and alarm logging to SD card.
- Machine retrofits: replacing obsolete relay logic or end-of-life PLCs on older machines.
Pairing the FX5U with other Mitsubishi products
The FX5U works best as part of a matched Mitsubishi system:
- GOT2000 HMI over Ethernet, with the FA transparent function so you can program the PLC through the HMI.
- MELSERVO servo amplifiers via pulse train or, with a simple motion module, over SSCNET III/H or CC-Link IE.
- FR-series VFDs over RS-485 using the built-in inverter communication instructions, which saves analog wiring and gives you drive status and fault codes on the HMI.
When the FX5U is not the right choice
Choose a larger platform if you need hot-swap redundancy, very high I/O counts across several panels, or many synchronised servo axes with electronic cams. In those cases an iQ-R system or a dedicated motion controller is the better investment.
