MELSERVO-J5 vs MELSERVO-JE: Choosing the Right Mitsubishi Servo

By AB Automation Team3 min read

Mitsubishi Electric offers two servo families that cover almost every machine we see in Indian factories: the economical MELSERVO-JE (MR-JE) and the high-performance MELSERVO-J5 (MR-J5). Both are reliable, both are widely used, and both are programmed with the same MR Configurator2 software. The question is how much performance and networking your machine actually needs.

MELSERVO-JE: the cost-effective general-purpose servo

MR-JE was designed to bring servo accuracy to machines that were previously built with steppers or induction motors with VFDs. Key characteristics:

  • 131,072 pulses/rev (17-bit) incremental encoder, which is ample for most positioning and speed tasks.
  • Pulse-train, analog and RS-485 control on the MR-JE-A, which connects easily to the pulse outputs of an FX5U PLC.
  • MR-JE-C variant with Ethernet and built-in point-table positioning, useful when you want to avoid pulse wiring.
  • Advanced one-touch tuning and vibration suppression that get most machines running quickly.

Typical uses: feeders, cut-to-length machines, labelling, simple pick-and-place, winding and textile auxiliaries.

MELSERVO-J5: Mitsubishi's flagship servo

MR-J5 is the latest generation, succeeding MR-J4. It is aimed at machines where speed, precision and network integration matter:

  • 67,108,864 pulses/rev (26-bit) absolute encoder for very fine positioning and smooth low-speed motion.
  • 3.5 kHz speed frequency response, giving shorter settling times and higher throughput.
  • CC-Link IE TSN network, plus general-purpose interface types, for synchronised multi-axis systems with iQ-R or iQ-F motion modules.
  • Predictive maintenance functions that estimate machine diagnosis data such as ball-screw and belt condition.
  • Absolute encoder as standard, so homing after power-up is not needed in most systems (battery requirements depend on the motor and configuration).

Typical uses: high-speed packaging, electronics assembly, press feeders, flying shear, printing and converting, and any machine with many synchronised axes.

How to choose

  1. Count the axes and check synchronisation. One to three independent axes driven from an FX5U point to MR-JE. Four or more axes moving together, or electronic cams, point to MR-J5 on a network.
  2. Check the cycle time. If the machine is limited by settling time at each stop, MR-J5's faster response often lifts output enough to justify the cost.
  3. Think about homing. If losing position after a power cut is a real problem (for example, long gantries or expensive tooling), an absolute system is worth having.
  4. Consider the future. OEMs standardising a platform for several years should look at MR-J5, since it is the current flagship and newer motion products are built around it.

Upgrading from MR-J2S, MR-J3 or MR-J4

Many machines in the field still run older MR-J2S and MR-J3 amplifiers, which are discontinued and increasingly hard to repair. Mitsubishi provides replacement guidance and conversion options, and in many cases the existing motor or mounting can be retained with an adapter. We assess each machine and recommend whether to repair, swap the amplifier only, or upgrade the full axis.
