Textile Machine Automation in Surat: VFD, Servo and PLC Upgrades That Pay Back

By AB Automation Team3 min read

Surat is one of India's largest textile hubs, with thousands of weaving, embroidery, texturising and processing units. Competition is tight and margins are thin, so every rupee saved on energy, rejection and downtime matters. Targeted textile machine automation upgrades, rather than buying new machines, are often the fastest way to improve those numbers.

Weaving: looms

  • VFDs on loom main motors give soft starting, adjustable speed for different qualities, and lower starting current on the shed's supply.
  • Electronic let-off and take-up retrofits using servo or stepper motors improve pick density consistency compared with older mechanical systems, reducing fabric faults.
  • Production monitoring with a PLC and HMI counting picks, stops and efficiency per loom helps owners identify problem machines and operators.

Embroidery machines

Embroidery machines depend on precise, synchronised motion. Common upgrades include replacing failed or obsolete main-shaft and frame drives with current servo systems, and repairing servo amplifiers at component level instead of importing costly replacement boards. Our drive repair service handles many embroidery machine drives.

Yarn preparation: TFO, texturising and warping

  • VFDs on spindle and main motors for speed adjustment and energy saving.
  • PLC-based tension and speed control on warping and sizing machines for consistent beam quality.
  • Brushless DC or speed control motors for auxiliary drives where compact size and steady speed matter, such as Oriental Motor BLE2 and BMU packages.

Processing: dyeing, stenter and printing

  • Jet dyeing machines: PLC/HMI control of temperature profiles, pump speed via VFD and recipe storage for repeatable shades.
  • Stenters: synchronising chain, padder and feed rollers with VFDs, VFDs on circulation and exhaust fans, and temperature control across chambers.
  • Printing machines: servo-based registration and drive synchronisation.
  • Boilers and thermopacks: processing houses depend on steam and thermic fluid; see our boiler energy-saving guide.

Upgrades with the fastest payback

UpgradeMain benefit
VFDs on fans and pumps (stenter, dyeing, boiler)Electricity saving, often large
Boiler combustion automationFuel saving
APFC panel for the unitLower demand charges and penalties
Recipe-based PLC/HMI on dyeing machinesFewer re-dyes and shade variation
Drive repair instead of replacementLower maintenance spend, less downtime

Dust and fibre: protect your electronics

Lint and fibre are the main enemies of drives and PLCs in textile units. Use sealed panels with filtered ventilation or panel air conditioners, clean heatsinks regularly and follow a preventive maintenance schedule. Many of the drive failures we repair in textile units come down to clogged cooling.
